How we use your donations

Money that the foundation raises is used to pay for the costs associated with our biennial conference and toward research initiatives. In the past, The Mikel Foundation and the Greenwood Genetic Center have provided money to cover many of the costs. We are proud (and very grateful to our donors, grantors, and fundraising members) that our foundation has now become self-sustaining.  We bring in some paid speakers for our conference, but volunteer parents provide/host the majority of our activities of the conference: discussion groups, activity updates, family activities, site planning, and so forth. The remaining conference funds cover the rental of conference related space, preparation of Phelan-McDermid Syndrome related materials for families, and subsidizing conference costs for families in need of assistance.  In 2007, we began offering mini-grants of $3,000 to $5,000 to researchers conducting studies of particular interest and import to the PMS community.  We have established our office and hired our first paid foundation staff member to provide an increased level of support to our families.
